What You Would Do in This Role

The Senior I&C Engineer participates in the design of different aspects of energy industry projects from inception to completion. Leadership, coordination, planning and preparation for executing commissioning activities including:

  • Assurance of correct installation of instrumentation and control equipment
  • Tracking punch items for both instrumentation and controls systems to completion.
  • Sign off for pre-commissioning and commissioning check sheets.
  • Verify and red line any discrepancies in P&ID’s, wiring diagrams, equipment design, and Sequence of Operations (SOO’s).
  • Verify device calibrations and configurations match control system design and meets facility requirements.
  • Startup and commissioning of control systems, 24VDC power panels, 480VAC VFDs, and field devices
  • Serve as Client Owner for instrumentation and controls scope handover to Operations.
  • Support and provide technical knowledge and problem-solving skills as Commissioning SME (Subject Matter Expert) including pre-commissioning, commissioning, and start up procedures.
  • Support oversight of vendors in performance test runs and acceptance testing.
  • Verify that client codes, standards and specifications are correctly implemented.
  • Serve as liaison and central point of contact between Client Instrumentation & Controls Team and Commissioning
  • Ensure documentation is captured in required databases for handover to operations teams.
  • Experience with Allen Bradley PLCs and Siemens DCS systems is required.
  • Developing and engineering instrumentation and control system designs to support the process design for a project, and to support or proposal consisting of a normal process unit
  • Providing comprehensive engineering and design services by establishing design criteria and preparing specifications, design computations, drawings, models and bills of material in accordance with basic project requirements
  • Participating in the design of component parts and individual units
  • Exercising cost/budget control, and reviewing and monitoring designs for conformance with control estimates and project specifications
  • Reviewing and maintaining project schedules, and tracking engineering tasks and deliverables in conjunction with project management
  • Supervising the various activities involved in the design of a project consisting of several complex process units
  • Performing detailed engineering calculations
  • Participating in design reviews and HAZOPs as required
  • Providing technical guidance to junior staff
  • Interfacing with client representatives
  • Maintaining current knowledge of industry and regulatory standards
  • Reviewing vendor or subcontractor quotations, drawings, and specifications for technical adequacy and conformance with project requirements
  • Applying advanced engineering techniques and analyses to complex engineering tasks
  • Adhering to Vista Quality Management System (QMS)
  • Ensuring design is in accordance with applicable codes and requirements, including Vista and client specifications and standards
  • Assigning and outlining work for others, and reviewing work for technical accuracy and adequacy
  • Actively stewarding change management as related to their scopes of work
  • Preparing or assisting in the preparation of discipline inputs for cost estimates for proposals
  • Providing construction support
  • Authenticating documentation with a professional engineering stamp as required
  • Preparing P&ID inputs and providing instrument selection
  • Developing and reviewing instrument index, instrument location drawings, in-line and offline instrument datasheets instrument F&G and analyzer datasheets and inline instrument sizing
  • Creating and reviewing I/O lists and assignments, instrument wiring drawings and loop diagrams and instrument UPS load requirements lists
  • Preparing material requisitions and technical bid evaluations for field instruments and control systems
  • Designing instrument junction boxes and control system (i.e.PLC/DCS/SIS) panels
  • Reviewing cable schedules
  • Preparing I&C specifications and design criteria
  • Preparing shutdown keys and cause and effect diagrams
  • Preparing control narratives and providing input to control philosophies
  • Designing fiber optic panels and termination drawings
  • Designing control system architectures
  • Preparing engineering and construction work packages
  • Providing technical support to vendors for DCS/SIS/FG panels design and fabrication, and mechanical/electrical equipment
  • Performing other duties as requested

Requirements

  • Eight (8) or more years of progressive experience in energy industry facilities engineering and design in the energy industry
  • Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in engineering or applied science
  • Ability to work and collaborate within a multi-disciplinary team including Process, Mechanical, Civil, Structural & Architectural, Electrical, Instrumentation & Controls and Piping Engineers and Designers as well as Project Management and Procurement personnel
  • P.Eng. registration with APEGA
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills, technical competence and attention to detail
  • Self-motivated and efficient in time management
  • Strong working knowledge and understanding of applicable codes and industry standards
  • Ability to meet safety requirements in order to attend site visits 

Preferred

  • Ten (10) years or more of experience as a fully qualified engineer, with five or more years of experience in the energy industry.
